On Saturday, we attended the Juneteenth celebration.
The gentleman at this table represented & taught about people of both Native American and African American mixed heritages.
Looking at pictures, sculptures & other Afrocentric items.
Doing bead work....
This is Alex walking the slave trail. It made me a little emotional to see her & Jordan on it, knowing that it's very likely my own ancestors walked this same path here in chains. I take pride in seeing how far we've come and like to think that those spirits would be proud of us too.
and most likely the slave ship docked right around this exact mark....
A panel of guest speakers, from collegiate historians to community activists spoke on various topics.
and here are the girls doning their African beaded head dress & waist belts. It took them quite a long time to string these tiny beads.
This is a wonderful cultural event to partake in. It's held around the same time annually, so check your local listings for the 2012 celebration to experience it yourself, all backgrounds welcome :)
On Fathers Day, we took dad to breakfast.
I had these DELICIOUS sweet potatoe & pecan pancakes with carmelized bananas.
and the girls spent the rest of the day loving up on daddy. As you can see, they didn't want their picture taken, hence Alexs crazy "extra" smile and Jordans pout. Oh well...
Love the Daddy shot.

Even though I wasn't born here I think I would have got emotional seeing that trail...knowing that some place my ancestors did the same thing.
