My prayers now go out to his beautiful three children with hopes that they can live the types of lives he wanted so desperately for himself- a life of unconditional love, freedom &  normalcy.

Formal Learning Materials

The summer is a time where I can pretend to be that stay at home, home-schooling mama I so envy the rest of the year. So, before school even ends I find myself trying to hunt down every local free activity  and come up with various weekly "schedules". I'm thinking this summer we will spend about 2 hours in the morning- with mini- breaks,  doing academics.

So far we've been using the following home materials in addition to various read alouds from the library,  and weekly online challenges:

First Language Lessons

Suppose the Wolf Were an Octopus?

Singapore Primary Mathematics (about to start 1b) along with Shiller Math

Cursive handing writing practice (requested by Montessori school in fall)

GOD's Creation Series (science)

Our outdoors activities include:

biweekly art class here.

biweekly little explorers nature class here.

weekly harvesting for food bank/and horticulture here.

lastly, here's a quick video of Alex doing her first poem memorization from the First Language Lessons book. She had it memorized before the end of the day :) Download The caterpillar poem

Father's Day 2009

This isn't a new picture, or even a really "good" picture...but I love the way daddy and the girls look in it. He's a great daddy who is absolutely adored by his girls and who absolutely adores his girls....plus he takes pretty good care of mommy :)
Here's to you Steve. We love you.

Yeah- our first week of summer vacation

This was our first week home. Granted, I had to head into school on Monday just to clean up my classroom and some last minute signatures, and again for about an hour on Thursday....but even that was like a vacation. The girls drew on the chalkboard and Alex throughly enjoyed playing teacher to baby sis Jordan.
We've been really busy this week, just heading out around town and enjoying ourselves. I will create a separate post on all the "formal" learning we're doing this summer and a list of what we're using. But for now...let's just focus on the random experiences our first week of "no work- no nursery/preschool facility", has bought us. If you're a teacher, how did you spend your first week of freedom?

Also- just in-case it looks like our life is just a perfect mix of "fun" nonstop (it's easy to appear that way in blogland)...I thought I mention that on Friday I had to lug both kiddos to the Court Building becuase mommy made an illegal U-turn and has been sentenced to attend traffic school or pay the fine. Alex was fascinated by the judge and all the cases we had to sit through until our turn...petty larceny, DUI's, etc
I was embarrased beyond belief sitting there and having to admit to my daughter that mommy made a poor choice while driving and was now having to face the consequences.  Just thought I'd share and bring a dose of reality to my life in "blogland".

Short Plays for Kids

Alex has been bitten by the "drama" bug and expressed interest in wanting to read a play and then perform one this summer.  I'm thinking we won't just run out and sign her up for Drama Kids quite yet :)  Instead, I'm looking to see if anyone can recommend some short plays she and I can read together at home, and then we'll opt to perform one  for the family say over Labor Day. Any thoughts or suggestions folks? Her preschool is doing a graduation "Big Show" that she's currently practicing for which includes mini skits, singing and dancing- but I can already tell...and she's specifically already told me,  that she wants to do more.

Happy Birthday Alex, 5 Years Old!

Here's the birthday girl. Alex turned 5 years old yesterday. We're having the big party on Saturday with her classmates & family. Yesterday was just the four of us at home. Her big treats- pizza, chewing gum (this was her first time having gum and she was thrilled), cake and a movie. Another first was getting to watch a movie  (with the exception of grandma introducing Lion King & Cinderella at her house)- she chose Wall-E.

For everyone's birthday- we go all out on the cake. Here's the latest creation by our favorite baker. I asked for a "nature/garden" inspired cake and here's what he designed (I'm spinning the cake to photograph the different sides).

Can you see the little birds flying in the sky, little stones, ladybug and rabbit?

Isn't this a lovely tree, I can just imagine a gnome family living inside.

Okay- enough cake pictures. Alex had a wonderful birthday. More pictures to come from her first big birthday party this Saturday at this cool place.

Life Updates

I mentioned in my last post that my father has been sick. He passed back on April 24th. I haven't really felt much like blogging. Alex has taken it rather well...but we've just had a compilation of other things also going on. Her favorite Aunt Jenny moved to Georgia this week and my husbands father is moving to Louisiana at the end of the month. I hate how she feels like she's lost/loosing both grand dads at the same time. Not to mention, Mr. Fish died after "someone" forgot to put chlorine drops in the water. So, it's been  a little stressful around here to say the least. We're going out today to get a new fish.

On a happier note, we finally chose/were accepted into a wonderful established Montessori school for Alex next year. It's a little hike across town (we're spoiled becuase it's really only 20mins away), but after touring numerous schools, this was the one that Alex really loved. We're very happy it worked out.

Given everything going on, we've put most "lessons" on hold. Alex still reads her books, we've been planting vegetables, doing some art work and playing cards/Mighty Minds and writing/illustrating stories. Jordan is becoming more interested in books and very early Montessori work.  Later this morning we have our 2nd family garden workshop and this evening there is a kids day celebration at a local park. I'm hoping to also make it by the Farmer's Market. Sounds like a busy day ahead......life goes on.

Here's the original painting by Picasso. Then Alex's interpretation (it's really an exercise in primary/ making secondary colors)

Lastly, Baby Jordan doing some cylinder and primary color work. I'm noticing she has a long (for a baby) concentration time already :)

Earth Day 2009

IMG_0160

We celebrated Earth Day in our favorite garden on Saturday. I knew we wouldn't have time to do much on the actual day (my father has been ill and we've been going there after work this week).  On Saturday we had our first family workshop class and the day's topic was Soil. There was also an exhibit going on showing off early modes of transportation (AKA pollutant free transportation)

Happy Birthday Jordan!

We celebrated Jordan's birthday this past Sunday with an old fashioned family  party.
I don't know where the year has gone, but we're so thankful for the gift of my little ray of sunshine
and all the love she has added to our family. Here's to you Jordan. You are loved.
